• Architecture reflecting Taiwanese culture and philosophy The design of Taipei 101 incorporates elements of traditional Eastern philosophy. The building resembles stacked segments of bamboo, symbolizing growth and prosperity. There are eight segments in total, and the number “8” is considered lucky, representing wealth and fortune. You may also notice decorative motifs shaped like ancient Chinese “Ruyi” scepters, symbolizing safety and security. The building’s layout and orientation were also influenced by feng shui principles.
~ Visiting Guide ~ Useful information to enhance your visit:
• The meaning behind “101” Taipei 101 has exactly 101 floors above ground. The number also symbolizes striving beyond perfection (100 → 101) and represents the digital era with “1” and “0”.
• The giant damper that protects the building Inside the observatory, you can see a massive 660-ton, 5.5-meter-wide sphere suspended in the center. This is a wind damper that stabilizes the building against strong winds and earthquakes. It moves like a pendulum to reduce structural sway.
It also inspired Taipei 101’s mascot, “Damper Baby.” • Multilingual guides available Taipei 101 welcomes international visitors with multilingual support, including Japanese. Audio guides and interactive panels are available via QR codes and touchscreens, making it easy to learn about the building and views.
• Official mascot: Damper Baby The building’s mascot, inspired by the wind damper, can be found throughout the facility.
